New driving rules for drivers over 65: Bill Introduced

Active discussions continue in Ukraine regarding the new bill No. 8082, which could introduce significant changes to traffic rules, particularly for drivers aged 65 and older. One of the key innovations is the introduction of regular medical check-ups to assess cognitive functions such as attention, reaction time, and vision. These indicators are crucial for safe driving, as these abilities may gradually decline with age.

The bill also stipulates that drivers over 70 will undergo medical examinations even more frequently, with driver's license renewals required annually. Such a system has long been in place in many European Union countries, including Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. These measures align with the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to reduce the number of accidents and road fatalities to zero.

It is understandable that the new requirements may spark some controversy among older drivers, as they may perceive these changes as excessive restrictions. However, road safety must remain a priority. Statistics show that with aging, the risk of traffic accidents increases due to deteriorating health and cognitive functions. Regular health checks will help identify potential issues early on and reduce the risk of accidents.

The bill is still under consideration in the Verkhovna Rada, but there is a high likelihood of its adoption. These changes are part of Ukraine's European integration efforts and aim to harmonize Ukrainian legislation with European road safety standards.
